Many have said that
A very much circulated phobia among many Nigeria citizens regarding this election is the question of if an Igbo man can be trusted with power.
The reservation has led a serious fight against the obidient movement and the Peter Obi Campaign effort in the fight to Aso Rock in 2023.
We know very well that the matter started about 58 years ago, shortly after the birth of the New Country called Nigeria in 1960, that the first Military coup that ushered in Military era was initiated by an Igbo man. Not long after that, the Civil war broke out in the new formed country, and it became the war of Nigeria versus Igbos.
These two remarkable but very sad histories of the country with Igbo as the central theme has been the reason for the fear of an Igbo man in the political helm of the country. This has resulted in a deliberate sidelining of the Igbo race from delicate political offices in the country and this has continued for well over 55 years.
About a decade ago when the new generation of the Igbos realize that they are being marginalized in the country, they started to speak out individually and in groups. The recent biggest group that has front-led the Igbo struggle against marginalization and oppression is IPOB which stands for Indigenous People Of Biafra.
Though proscribed by the Nigerian government and its leader arrested and detained since June 2021, the group which initially led a struggle against marginalization is now struggling for secession.
Now, from the first military junta by an Igbo man to the first and only civil war in the country by the Nigerian Government against the Igbos to MASSOB (Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra) to IPOB, is the marginalization the Igbo race from the political system by the Nigerian State justified? And for how long are they going to be made to continue in a country that marginalize them this way? Again, can an Igbo man be trusted with power?
Some people uphold the view that the marginalization of the Igbos is wrong in all facets. Apart from negating the principles of democracy, it breeds disunity and distrust among the nationals and punishes every citizen of the country with the fruit of tribalism. This has been one of the biggest reasons for the slow progress of the country in the past 62 years.
